Flood of '93

Gorget 1994

Patinated Sterling Silver, frosted quartz

This gorget evokes the visual memory of the Great Flood of 1993 that hit the Midwest and inundated much of the Mound City?s northern and southern areas. Electronic and print media constantly focused on St. Louis and informed the world of the ongoing disaster by flashing incredible images of the watery devastation as it swept over the landscape engulfing homes, farms and industrial complexes.

As tributaries and the main channels of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers overflowed their banks, daily calls went out to the weary citizenry to form sandbag brigades where the contaminated flood waters threatened to breach levees. For weeks on end, St. Louisans watched with awe as the mighty Mississippi rolled by ravaging everything in its path, realizing that no human effort could stop the ongoing destruction unleashed by the incessant rains up north.
