This archaic symbol was used to depict the family unit before a written language was developed. The triangle with a center bar is the male; the "y" represents the female; the beads are the seeds that symbolize children.

The variations include: (Left) Man and wife, a symbol I have used for wedding party gifts; (Center) The traditional family: man, woman, children (seeds/beads); (Right) a contemporary version, a single mother supporting her children.
